Tropical Dry Forest
The tropical dry forest is one of the most fascinating and least understood ecosystems in Costa Rica. At first glance especially during the dry season it may appear lifeless: leafless trees, ground covered in dry leaves, intense heat, and silence. However, this first impression is misleading.
Far from being dead, the dry forest is an extraordinarily adapted ecosystem, where every plant and every animal has developed precise strategies to survive extreme conditions of heat and water scarcity.
For several months each year, primarily between December and May, rainfall is almost nonexistent. In response, trees shed their leaves to reduce water loss, transforming the landscape into a palette of browns, grays, and golden tones. The soil becomes dry and brittle, and many surface water sources disappear. During this period, the forest enters a state of apparent dormancy, where life does not vanish, but instead slows down and becomes less visible.
With the arrival of the first rains, however, one of the most remarkable transformations in nature takes place. Within just a few days, the dry forest changes dramatically: new leaves emerge, vibrant flowers bloom, insects appear, and with them come increased activity from birds, reptiles, and mammals.
